Train-the-Trainer Workshop ‘Composting & Circular Economy in Practice’

On 19 November 2025, FOCUS Strategic Thinking Consultants (FOCUS STC), alongside our partner American Farm School, successfully hosted BBioNets’ inaugural Greek Train-the-Trainer (T-t-T) workshop in Thessaloniki.

Titled ‘Composting & Circular Economy in Practice,’ the event focused on sustainable solutions for agricultural production, a topic of high interest among the members of the project’s Greek Forest and Agriculture Network (FAN). The primary goal was to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively implement circular economy principles on their farms and act as local trainers for their peers.

Comprehensive, Action-Oriented Training

The workshop was structured into three sessions, moving efficiently from theory to practical application:

• Theoretical Session: Participants mastered the science of quality composting, including understanding the thermophilic phase of composting, the concept of the maturation curve, and how to regulate the crucial Carbon-to-Nitrogen (C:N) ratio (Figure 1).
• Practical (Field) Session: The hands-on segment provided direct experience in converting various organic waste streams (animal, plant, and household) into high-value organic fertiliser (Figure 2).
• Laboratory Session: The workshop concluded with a brief opportunity to observe key biological agents, and in particular vermicomposting worms, under a microscope (Figure 3).

Accelerating Circularity in Agriculture

The workshop equipped participants with the theoretical and practical competencies needed for the effective on-farm implementation of advanced composting techniques, which in turn speeds up the integration of circular economy principles.
