The BBioNets project completed in December its first series of European Transnational Region (ETR) meetings, bringing together Forest and Agriculture Networks (FANs) from across the Atlantic, Central Europe, and Mediterranean regions. Organised by FOCUS with the support of national partners, these meetings served as a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange and fostered meaningful discussions on pressing challenges in the bioeconomy sector.

Facilitating Cross-Fertilisation Among FANs
As BBioNets’ partner responsible for the interconnection among its FANs, FOCUS coordinated these collaborative gatherings that provided stakeholders with the opportunity to share experiences, identify challenges, and explore tangible strategies for sustainable forestry and agriculture.
A Collaborative Space for Solutions
The ETR meetings were more than just conferences—they were interactive forums aiming to generate real impact. Bringing together experts, researchers, policymakers, and industry representatives, each meeting encouraged the active exchange of best practices, innovative technologies, and regional insights. A key highlight was the participation of speakers from external projects, who enriched discussions with fresh perspectives and expertise, further strengthening the collaborative nature of the initiative.
Regional Insights and Key Takeaways
Each meeting provided unique regional perspectives and actionable insights, reflecting the diverse challenges and opportunities within the European bioeconomy.
– 1st Atlantic ETR Meeting –
Focusing on the enhancement of circularity in the forest sector, this meeting highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement and the need for tailored bioeconomy solutions that address specific regional contexts. Key takeaways included the necessity for robust policy frameworks to support bio-based innovation and the potential of cross-sectoral collaboration to drive sustainable growth.

– 1st Central Europe ETR Meeting –
This meeting centred on livestock and agricultural waste management in the framework of the circular bioeconomy. Key takeaways included the need to integrate advanced technologies into traditional agricultural practices and identify new market opportunities to enhance the viability of bio-based products.

– 1st Mediterranean ETR Meeting –
This meeting addressed common types of biomass and the technologies used to process them and produce valuable outputs, considering the specific challenges of the Mediterranean region. Key takeaways included the need to develop strategies to enhance resilience against climate change, especially in drought-prone areas, and to strengthen local community involvement.

The recordings of all meeting are available on the BBioNets YouTube channel.
A Step Forward for Sustainable Innovation
Through these ETR meetings, FOCUS and its partners have successfully facilitated cross-regional collaboration, providing a vital space for discussion, innovation, and solution-driven dialogue. By uniting stakeholders across disciplines and leveraging expertise from external projects, these events have laid the groundwork for future advancements in sustainable forestry and agriculture.
The journey doesn’t stop here. With these valuable insights in hand, BBioNets and its partners will continue to drive cooperation and implement impactful solutions across Europe’s bioeconomy landscape.
